WHAT:       Taking Root is kicking off its campaign to address the current and impending loss of the region’s tree canopy. The Tri-State region is confronting a devastating loss of trees due to the emerald ash borer and other insect infestations, new disease, the prevalence of invasive plants, and other threats. Taking Root aims to combat the local tree crisis through education, better management of existing trees, and most of all, by planting trees to help replace those lost. The campaign is partnering with public and private entities and will be seeking participation from individuals and organizations to achieve its goal of planting 2 million trees by 2020, one for everyone in the region.

The Taking Root kick-off event will include:

  • Remarks by business, government and education leaders of the Tri-State region;
  • A ceremonial re-enactment of the Park’s 1882 tree planting by school children; and
  • Distribution of inaugural trees to the eight counties and principle cities in each state in the region.

WHEN:       Thursday, September 26, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

WHERE:    Eden Park, President’s Grove
