When people think of an endangered species, they picture animals like tigers, gorillas, or giant pandas. Scaly, slimy, and six-legged creatures are usually overlooked. The American burying beetle is among these important, but oft-forgotten species. The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has joined with the Fernald Preserve to help reestablish this critically endangered insect. On June 21, zookeeper Mandy Pritchard will discuss this unique conservation program that is happening in your own backyard.

The program will begin in the Visitors Center where you’ll learn about this creature’s bizarre, yet interesting, life cycle. Did you know this beetle provides parental care for its young? After the presentation, we will head out to the field to get a firsthand look at what is being done to aid the recovery of the American Burying Beetle.
