2015 DEAF ZOO DAY

CINCINNATI, OH – This year the Hearing Speech & Deaf Center (HSDC) is commemorating 90 years of helping the Greater Cincinnati community overcome obstacles to communication. HSDC is celebrating by offering several outreach events including 2015 Deaf Zoo Day. In partnership with the Cincinnati Zoo &Botanical Garden, the will take place at the Cincinnati Zoo on Sunday, April 12, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 2015 Deaf Zoo Day will include:

  • Discounted tickets to the zoo for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing
  • American Sign Language interpreted zoo exhibits and shows
  • Booths and raffles in a reserved picnic shelter
  • Snacks and drink bracelets provided for free

Discounted tickets for d/Deaf and hard of hearing individuals are available for purchase online via HSDC website www.hearingspeechdeaf.org or in person at HSDC Corryville office through April 10th. Ticket purchase includes entry into the zoo, parking, use of picnic shelter, snacks and all-you-can-drink bracelets. Event t-shirts will be available for purchase for $12 in the Maasai Mesa shelter, quantity and sizes will be limited.

This afternoon event is a wonderful way for the d/Deaf community to enjoy camaraderie, feel included and learn “in their own language-ASL” what the zoo animal exhibits are all about. HSDC is anticipating 300+ d/Deaf individuals and families attend and enjoy the Zoo Blooms as well. HSDC strengthens our community through advocacy and by supporting individuals and families to overcome obstacles to communication.  We believe that communication is the foundation of all human interactions.  We provide a barrier-free, inclusive and nurturing environment for anyone seeking to overcome obstacles regarding speech, hearing or D/deafness.

Community Services for the Deaf is a department within HSDC and is one of ten designated Community Centers for the Deaf in the State of Ohio. CSD provides outreach, advocacy, education, summer programming for children and teens who are D/deaf, ASL sign language interpreting, C-Print transcription, sign language classes, ADA consultation, assistance with activities of daily living, computers for internet access regarding medical questions, assistive device consultation, sales and provision of devices at reduced rates for those needing financial assistance.
