Caatinga Lancehead

Bothrops erythromelas

Like all pit vipers, the caatinga lancehead has a pair of long, hollow fangs through which it injects venom. The fangs are kept folded back against the roof of the mouth except when striking. It plays an important role in helping to control the rodent population and the spread of disease among rodents.
