Tri-colored Backswimmer

Notonecta hoffmani

Polychromic means ‘many colors’ and this bug can be either solid red, white, black or any combination. Swimming upside down just below the surface allows it to easily grab floating prey. Its silvery coat is an air layer trapped in place with tiny hairs and used for breathing underwater.
