Saving Species with Science®

Through their research, CREW scientists have become world experts on the reproductive physiology of Sumatran and Indian rhinos.  In an effort to increase animal numbers and improve genetic diversity, CREW uses science and technology to achieve numerous reproductive breakthroughs in these highly endangered Asian rhinos.

View our rhinos online through Time Warner Cable!

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is the only place in the world where Sumatran rhinos – one of the rarest species on earth – are on exhibit to the public. Thanks to a partnership with Time Warner Cable, a live video feed is now available over the internet via Rhino iCAM so that people all over the world can watch the rhinos as they enjoy their special, custom built outdoor exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo.  World renowned Sumatran rhino “Emi” is typically out in the yard in the mornings frolicking with her third calf “Harapan”.  In the afternoons, Emi’s second calf “Suci” gets to enjoy the yard with its cool mud bath.

Special Exhibit for a Special Species

Sumatran rhinos are deep forest dwelling animals that spend hot days submerged in mud wallows. To provide the highest standard of care for these amazing animals, the Cincinnati Zoo staff has built special shade structures over the exhibit yard to protect the rhinos from too much sunlight that can hurt their eyes.  Additionally, mud wallows have been added to the yards using a special mix of dirt that the rhinos love, and a pool with waterfall are included in which the rhinos can bathe.  As you take your turn controlling the Rhino iCAM, you may want to scan the yard to see these special features that keep the rhinos happy and healthy.
