All eyes are on the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Way Kambas National Park on the island of Sumatra where a female rhino named Ratu and her mate Andalas (who was born and raised at the Cincinnati Zoo) are about to make history.

A very pregnant Ratu is due to deliver her calf in June or July 2012.  The calf will be the first bred Sumatran rhino in human care born in SE Asia since the breeding program was initiated in the mid 1980’s. If all goes well, Sumatra will become the second place in the world (after the Cincinnati Zoo) to successfully breed this critically endangered species.  With fewer than 200 Sumatran rhinos left in the world, breeding may be the last hope for this species’ survival.
