Blue-Throated Macaw

The blue-throated macaw was once thought to be extinct.  A population of about 50 birds was rediscovered living in palm tree groves on the savannas of Bolivia.  Conservation programs have worked to help rebuild the population.

The blue-throated macaw requires palm tree cavities in which to nest.  Older palm trees with cavities are cut down for fuel or to provide land for farming and with them go the available nest sites.  This loss of  habitat and lowered reproductivity rate puts the species at risk of extinction.
