CINCINNATI (May 17, 2019) – As home to one of only two accredited botanical gardens in Ohio and the Pollen Nation, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is the perfect location for a celebration of public gardens.  Join the fun, sponsored by Simple Truth, from 9am to noon on Saturday, May 18.

“We are highlighting our fantastic garden that provides a beautiful oasis for animal habitats, pollinators and humans,” said Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s Manager of Horticulture, Deb Zureick. “Over the last 20 years of planting and trialing hundreds of different plants throughout the Zoo, with an emphasis on diversity, we have accumulated great information on “The Best Plants” for urban landscapes. We want to share that information and help people select great plants that provide a healthy, diverse ecosystem and look great in their yards.”

The morning activities will include interactive, plant-related games for kids and sharable photo opportunities for everyone.  Gardeners, and potential gardeners, will learn how to plant a pollinator garden and get recommendations on which plants work best in their landscapes. Representatives from the plant division of the Zoo’s Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) will be on hand to explain how their research helps save endangered plants.

National Public Garden Day was created in 2009 to raise awareness about the importance of building vibrant, relevant gardens committed to community enrichment and environmental responsibility through community engagement, sustainable practices, and conversion.

This event is free with Zoo admission. The Zoo opens daily at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m.  Cincinnati Zoo members enjoy early entry at 9 a.m.  For more information visit www.cincinnatizoo.org.
