Wetlands are one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth and provide a variety of benefits for wildlife and people alike. Many species rely on wetlands for shelter, food, water and nesting sites. Wetlands also provide important ecological services such as flood control, water purification and recreational opportunities. Unfortunately, more than half of America’s wetlands have been destroyed. Current restoration and protection efforts are underway to curb the destruction. Wetland Trails and Swan Lake provide visitors with the opportunity to observe many native species such as turtles and waterfowl while learning about the importance of wetlands. Interactive stations along a boardwalk encourage visitors to look through telescopes and press buttons to hear various frog and bird calls.
