Love is in the Air on Valentine’s Day at the Cincinnati Zoo

Posted February 13, 2014

WHO:             On Valentine’s Day, love is in the air at the Cincinnati Zoo. Zoo keepers and staff have stepped in as cupid, to prepare large, heart shaped, paper-mache gift boxes, stuffed with delicious treats for the animals.  On Friday, keepers will deliver the gifts to the bonobos, orangutans, kea, and “Santos” the Zoo’s baby ocelot.

Scheduled gift delivery begins at 10:30 a.m.

WHAT:          These special gifts are not only nutritious treats, but are great enrichment activities for the animals.  Like humans, animals enjoy searching for and finding new treats.  Searching is a lot like hunting, which is a behavior these animals would display in the wild while foraging for food.

WHEN:          Friday, February 14, at 10:30 a.m.

10:30 a.m. – bonobos: large, paper-mache hearts stuffed with oranges, grapefruit, apples, sunflower seeds, biscuits, mixed nuts, leafy greens, and papaya.

10:45 a.m. – orangutan: large, paper-mache hearts stuffed with oranges, grapefruit, apples, sunflower seeds,  biscuits, mixed nuts, leafy greens, and papaya.

10:55 a.m. – kea: paper-mache hearts stuffed with watermelon, mixed nuts, and apples.
