Walk at the Cincinnati Zoo to Celebrate a Huge Milestone for the Little Hippo that Could

Fiona 1K Walk sure to be half a ton of fun!
- Temperatures must be 45 degrees or warmer for Fiona the hippo to be outside.
CINCINNATI (October 29, 2018) – Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is planning a big celebration to mark a huge milestone for its famous little hippo. Fiona is fast approaching 1000 pounds, which is a big deal considering that she weighed only 29 pounds when she arrived on January 24, 2017, six weeks before she was expected.
“We thought it would be fitting to celebrate the occasion with a plus-sized party,” said Zoo Director Thane Maynard. “We’re encouraging people to flaunt their Fiona fever by wearing Fiona gear or fun hippo-themed apparel.”
The non-competitive walk will take place on Saturday, December 1 at 9 a.m. and is limited to 1,000 Fiona fans. The “short walk for a big milestone” is open to people of all ages, abilities, and sizes, and the $29 registration fee includes a t-shirt designed by Cincy Shirts, a two pack smile cookie from Busken Bakery, and FREE admission to the Zoo and parking before 9 a.m. Proceeds support the Zoo’s More Home to Roam capital campaign.
“The Fiona 1K is a great opportunity for the community to get together to cheer the hometown hero that has brought smiles and hope to so many,” said Maynard. “Everyone loves Fiona!”
Gates open at 8 a.m. and First Watch will be serving up complimentary mini muffins, fruit, hot chocolate and coffee for all walkers before 9 a.m. The parade-style walk to will begin and end in Vine Street Village. Walkers wearing the most impressive Fiona fashions will be presented with a fun Fiona-themed prize.
