Crested guineafowl stick close together in flocks for safety. They peck here and there as they wander along, snatching up seeds and insects as they go. When something startles them, it sets the flock off running and chittering up a storm. Once the moment passes, they go back to scratching at the ground.

They are known to make a large harsh call when disturbed. Males make “kek-kek-kek” or “chi-chi-chi” calls, and females make ``buck-wheat buck-wheat`` cries.
