Although sea otters are native to other Indigenous homelands, their smaller cousin, kinohsamia, the river otter, is native to Myaamia ancestral lands. The Myaamia developed a term for the sea otter by adding mihsi, ‘big’, to reflect the sea otter’s larger size. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels such as oil for energy, we can help mitigate climate change and lessen the direct threat of oil spills in otter habitats.
