Who’s in charge? Three species of primates adopt circular hierarchy in shared habitat.
Summer is here, and so is our newest mixed species habitat just inside the entrance to Jungle Trails. This exhibit features three primate species which roam different levels of the rainforest canopies across Central and South America – white-faced saki monkey pair (Dakota & Penelope), and our male black howler monkey (Dash) and male golden-headed lion tamarin (Desmond) who were introduced to each other last June for social companionship.

Each of these species can have territorial tendencies, utilizing scent marking and vocalizations to indicate territory. As these individuals spend more time together, keepers have seen an interesting development of possible social hierarchy amongst them.
The saki pair (Dakota & Penelope) quickly claimed a dominance position over Dash, who has accepted his place. Desmond still seems to be finding his social status amongst the mix, but keepers have seen his confidence growing every day, and he is often spotted hanging out near Dash.
Everyone has settled into the new habitat quite well. Be sure to check the high points of the exhibit when visiting, as those are popular rest spots for all!
