Otterly Adorable Addition to Zoo Babies
First-time mom Munti gives birth just in time for Mother’s Day!
CINCINNATI, OH (May 9, 2025) – The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is excited to announce the newest arrivals to Zoo Babies, presented by General Electric Credit Union! Overnight, Munti, the Asian small-clawed otter, gave birth to a litter of pups—earlier than expected.
Sound on to hear the squeaks from the pups!
“Munti is a first-time mom and with that comes some risk. We are currently in a critical three-day window for the pups,” said Victoria McGee, Zoological Manager of Primates. “But hearing hearty squeaks that sound healthy is a great sign!”
In the days leading up to the birth, Munti began displaying increased nesting behaviors, prompting the care team to ensure she was comfortable in her preferred nesting spot. Munti, dad Flounder, and the pups are now tucked into their nest, out of view. Because of this, the team hasn’t yet been able to confirm the number of pups.
The otter family will remain off habitat for around the next eight weeks while they bond and care for their pups behind the scenes. During this time, the care team is closely monitoring their health and remains cautiously optimistic. Stay tuned on the Zoo’s social media pages for pupdates.
On Mother’s Day, May 12, moms get free admission courtesy of General Electric Credit Union. The Zoo opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. daily. Members get Early Entry and are welcome to enter the Zoo at 9 a.m.
