Saving Species, One Pawpaw at a Time!

Posted March 4, 2025 by Aislyn Tyler

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden partners with organizations all over the world to make giant leaps in conservation to protect biodiversity on earth and foster community engagement.

The CREW Plant Division partners with Bok Gardens in Lake Wales, Florida, to preserve and restore the Endangered Rugel’s Pawpaw. CREW uses in vitro propagation techniques to grow the pawpaw’s in culture to multiply them quickly. Once the plants develop roots and are removed from their tubes, we ship them to Florida, where they continue to grow until they reach maturity.

Our latest update at the end of 2024 brought exciting news—pawpaw’s from our 2019 shipment have matured and been successfully outplanted! At a time when conservation is more critical than ever, good news from our partners is a beacon of hope. The CREW Plant Division remains dedicated to protecting Earth’s biodiversity for generations to come, one pawpaw at a time.
