Mom keeps close eye on baby hippo during first outside introduction to big sis

CINCINNATI, OH (August 24, 2022) — Baby hippo Fritz, born on August 3 at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, got to meet his big sister in the outdoor habitat for the first time earlier today!  Five-year-old Fiona was curious but took her cues from her mom, Bibi, and backed off when Fritz got almost close enough for a nose boop.

“This first intro went very well.  Bibi was appropriately protective of Fritz but was not aggressive toward Fiona,” said Cincinnati Zoo’s director of animal care Christina Gorsuch.  “The exposure was brief but a great first step.”

The hippo team will continue to do introductions and will rotate hippos in and out in different combinations until Tucker is able to join the bloat

“We will continue to put Fiona, Fritz, and Bibi together for short periods until we’re confident that the three are comfortable together,” said Gorsuch.  “The next step will then be to add Tucker to the mix. We don’t have an exact timeline for when that will happen.”

Look for updates about when you might be able to see Fritz, Fiona, Bibi, and Tucker on Cincinnatizoo.org and on  Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube.

Hippo Cove will be closed during introductions, and the live hippo cams (available to members and virtual members) will be turned off.
