Now Open! Endangered in the wild, African penguin populations have dropped by 50% in the past 30 years. The new African Penguin Point habitat is three times the size of the previous African penguin space with a dramatically larger indoor bedroom area to encourage breeding, expand nesting sites and ultimately result in a thriving colony of 30+ birds. Multiple built-in enrichment opportunities throughout the habitat enhance the welfare of the species. Fans, misters, sprinklers, underwater jets, heat lamps, multiple substrates, and underwater enrichment attachment points provide a complex environment. These features promote natural behaviors for overall optimal health and wellbeing. Some of the enrichment features also allow the colony to stay outside longer during the year when cooler temperatures would normally dictate otherwise. RFID technology throughout the pool and beach area track real-time movements of the colony. All of these promote natural behaviors for overall optimal health and well-being! Because of the space and complexity of the habitat, 3 new species were introduced to our African penguin colony, including eastern white pelicans, white-breasted cormorants, and yellow-billed ducks.
